Most BBQ cleaning advice assumes a freestanding hooded BBQ on a concrete patio, a few steps from a garden tap. Many of the BBQs we clean are built into benches, fixed on apartment balconies, parked on timber decks or sitting beside a pellet smoker. Built-in BBQ cleaning is a different job from a freestanding clean, and so is a BBQ fixed on a balcony or parked on a timber deck.
Below are five setups from real Optima jobs in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide, and what each one means for you before a cleaner arrives.
In August 2024 we cleaned a built-in four-burner BBQ on the balcony of a Norwest apartment in Sydney. A built-in cannot be lifted out of its cabinetry, so it is cleaned in place: grates, hotplates, flame tamers and the drip tray come out, and everything else is cleaned where it sits.

Built-in BBQ, Emu Plains: a rusted hood interior and blackened hotplate before, stainless after.
That leaves the cabinet and drawer underneath. They are joinery, not part of the appliance, so they fall outside a standard BBQ clean. Yet that is where fat lands when a drip tray overflows.
Balconies add a second layer. Fire and Rescue NSW advises keeping BBQs on balconies at least a metre from other objects, and many apartment buildings have by-laws about BBQ use. Check yours, and whether the balcony has a tap and drain, before booking.
From the job: Open the cabinet under your built-in before you book. If there is grease on the shelf or in the drawer, mention it so it is quoted as part of the job rather than discovered on the day.
A St Lucia customer in Brisbane enquired in January 2026 about a built-in Beefeater Signature four-burner on his balcony. His words: it had not been cleaned for over a year. Helpfully, the unit could be moved outside for the clean.

Built-in BBQ, Newport: this is what a year of fat and carbon looks like, and what comes off.
The grates look worst, but most of a year’s fat drains into the drip tray and onto the base under the burners. CHOICE’s barbecue cleaning guide says to check the drip tray and, if it needs it, remove and replace the foil and fat absorbent material. A tray that has gone a year is well past that, and built-up fat sitting under a burner is a fire risk.
From the job: If your BBQ has gone a year or more, tell us that when you book. If the unit can be wheeled to a hard outdoor surface, the clean is faster and your balcony stays cleaner.
In July 2025 we cleaned a three-burner BBQ in East Brisbane that lived upstairs on a timber deck. It was on wheels, so the booking notes left the technician to decide on arrival whether to clean it in place or roll it downstairs.

Freestanding BBQ, Ashgrove: grease across the hotplate and grates before, bare metal after.
That decision matters. A BBQ clean produces a slurry of degreaser, fat and carbon. On concrete it hoses away. On timber it can soak into the grain and leave dark patches.
From the job: If your BBQ sits on decking, decide with the technician where the clean happens before any product comes out. Moving it to concrete or lawn near a tap is best. If it cannot move, the deck needs a heavy drop sheet under the whole work area.
A North Adelaide customer booked us in September 2026 for a built-in Beefeater stainless steel four-burner, set up next to the garage with drainage close by. Drainage nearby makes a built-in far easier to clean. What a built-in cannot do is move under cover, and on the day of her booking heavy rain meant the job had to be rescheduled.

Stainless built-in BBQ, Roseville: cleaned in place, cabinet and surround left untouched.
Built-ins also raise a safety point that freestanding BBQs do not. Resources Safety and Health Queensland warns that LP gas builds up in the cabinet below because it is heavier than air, and that cabinetry needs the correct ventilation. It also advises against storing spare gas cylinders or cleaning chemicals near the appliance.
From the job: Book outdoor built-ins with the forecast in mind and rebook early if rain is likely. While the cabinet is open, clear out spare cylinders and cleaning products and check the vents are not blocked.
In September 2025 a Bray Park customer north of Brisbane booked online for what the form recorded as a single Weber Q. On the call, it turned out to be two units: a Weber Q 3200 and a Weber SmokeFire EX6 pellet smoker.
They are two different jobs. A gas grill is mostly degreasing. A pellet smoker has a hopper, a firepot full of ash and electronics that must stay dry. CHOICE make the same distinction: a pellet grill needs 240V power for its ignition, the ash wants removing once the smoker has cooled, and carbon build-up inside the smoker and under the hood should be scraped back every three or four uses. Large hoods and lids also have to come off and rest somewhere while the firebox is cleaned, and a brick wall is not a good place.
From the job: List every unit by brand and model when you book, including smokers, side burners and rangehoods. Clear a soft spot such as lawn or an old blanket for the hood to rest on, and take photos of any existing marks before work starts.
We ask for a photo of the BBQ when you enquire, because the setup decides the time, the protection needed and where the clean happens. On the day, the technician inspects the BBQ, disconnects the gas, removes every part that comes out, scrubs the grates on both sides, scrapes carbon from the hood and firebox into the drip pan, cleans the tray, then reassembles, polishes and tests it. The full scope and pricing are on our oven and BBQ cleaning page. Once the gas is reconnected, Energy Safe Victoria recommends a soapy water test on the cylinder fittings: bubbles will form if gas is escaping.
We clean built-in, balcony and freestanding BBQs in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Canberra, Hobart and Newcastle. Send a photo with your enquiry and we will tell you what your setup needs.
Yes. Built-in BBQs are cleaned in place. The grates, hotplates, flame tamers and drip tray come out, and the firebox, hood and exterior are cleaned where they sit. The cabinet underneath is joinery, so mention it at booking if it needs cleaning too.
It can, but it is better moved to concrete or lawn if it is on wheels. Degreaser, fat and carbon run-off can stain timber and affect some deck finishes. Otherwise the deck should be fully covered first.
Usually, yes. Check your building by-laws first, and let us know whether the balcony has a tap and floor drain so the technician comes prepared. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends keeping balcony BBQs at least a metre from other objects once they are back in use.
Not as standard, because it is part of the cabinetry rather than the BBQ. If fat has dripped onto the shelf or into a drawer, ask for it to be added to the quote.
Yes, as long as both are on the booking. Smokers and pellet grills need a different process to a gas BBQ, with ash removal and care around electronics, so they take extra time.
