How to Clean Carpet with Baking Soda

November 19, 2020 -

Carpet is a popular option for floor covering. Cleaning your carpet can be a hassle and it’s tough to keep track of which cleaners are safe for carpet and which are not. Thankfully, there is one substance that is proven safe for carpets and has versatile uses in carpet cleaning: baking soda.

As a Spot Cleaner

Baking soda is a great, non-toxic option for cleaning your carpet. When liquid is spilled onto carpet, the secret to keeping it from becoming a permanent stain is to remove all of the liquid. Too often, people allow the liquid to sit on the carpet. As the liquid absorbs into the carpet, it also seeps down into the carpet padding underneath.

At the time of the spillage, immediately pat the area dry with a clean towel. Then, sprinkle baking soda over the affected area. The baking soda will absorb any remaining liquid. Once the liquid has been thoroughly absorbed, you can sweep or vacuum up the dampened baking soda.

If the liquid has created a stain, you can remove it by combining baking soda with another non-toxic cleaning agent: vinegar. Mix equal parts of vinegar and baking soda until it creates a thick paste. Then, apply the paste to the stained area of carpet. Using a wet rag, work the paste into the carpet. Allow the solution to sit until it becomes dry. You will see the stain appear in the crystals of baking soda. Once dry, vacuum up the soiled baking soda.

This process may need to be repeated for stubborn stains and may even require a professional cleaner if a 2nd or 3rd attempt doesnt shift it.

As a Deodorizer

Carpets have a tendency to hold onto smells. These smells can come from the air in the house or from messes that have not been properly cleaned up. To deodorise your carpet, sprinkle baking soda evenly across the carpeted area. Allow the baking soda to remain sitting on the carpet for one to two hours. The porosity of the baking soda will absorb odours present in the carpet.

If you want to really freshen up your carpet, you can add a drop of essential oil to your baking soda prior to sifting it onto the carpet. Once the baking soda is given ample time to absorb the offensive odours, vacuum up the baking soda. Now, your carpet is free of stains and odours, thanks to all-natural and non-toxic baking soda.
