How to Keep Carpets Clean with Kids and Pets

January 23, 2022 - ,

Keeping your carpets clean can be difficult even if you live alone, but if you add pets or kids to the equation, it can feel impossible.

The good news is that it can be a little easier on you if you follow a few simple rules, and the rules are easier to adhere to if you change your daily habits a little bit.

In fact, once you get used to these changes, they become second nature to you.

If you’d like to keep your carpets in better shape even with kids or pets in the home, there are a few things you can do.

Clean up Stains Immediately

If you notice that anything has spilled onto your carpet, try to clean it up right away.

This way, the stain won’t have a chance to set itself too deep into the carpet, which can save you both time and money in the future.

Remember that with most stains, blotting the carpet is the best thing to do.

Rubbing it may make the debris go deeper into the carpet, which can make it harder to clean when you do your weekly cleaning chores.

After you blot the stain, run a vacuum over the area to remove the debris.

Initiate New Household Rules

The best carpet cleaning rule is to try not to get the carpet dirty in the first place.

While this is not entirely realistic, it is still easy if you make a list of rules that everyone has to follow.

These include rules such as only eating in the dining room or kitchen, allowing only cups with lids in rooms that have carpet in them, and making sure that everybody removes their shoes right when they come through the door.

Between these rules and the “clean up right away” rule, you should be able to avoid a lot of stains from occurring.

Stick to a Regular Cleaning Schedule

Keeping your carpets and rugs clean is a lot easier if you plan to clean regularly, which means choosing to perform certain cleaning tasks on certain days.

For instance, you could choose to spot vacuum messes daily, give the entire house a good vacuuming and mopping every week, and shampoo your rugs and carpets every month.

Professional carpet and rug cleaning is a great idea because their machines go deep into your carpet and get every bit of debris out of there.

Choose a Certain Area That Will Be Used for Play

Letting kids and pets play only in certain areas can contain messes in those areas, which means the areas are much easier to clean afterward.

You can use baby gates, puppy pads, and other items to let kids and pets know they need to remain in a certain area if they wish to play.

Even pets can quickly learn where to go if they want to play, and it’s much easier to keep one room free of kids’ and pets’ messes than it is to clean the entire home every time you notice a mess there.

Learn How to Clean the Different Types of Messes

Even if you plan to clean up spills daily, it’s a lot easier if you first learn what to do to keep certain debris from turning into permanent stains.

For example, you should know to blot red wine spills, use a carpet-cleaning spray for food stains, put some ice on items such as chewing gum and peanut butter to remove them, and use an ammonia and hot water mixture to remove vomit on the carpet.

When a spill occurs, it needs to be removed as soon as possible because this is the best way to end up with fewer stains in the end.
