In our previous article, we showed you how to prevent scratches from appearing on your parquet or laminate floor. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find the article here. This time we want to show you how to repair your floor if some damaged areas have eventually appeared. There are plenty of methods of recovering and by reading this article you will be able to get acquainted with some of them.

But before we start there is one very important thing you should pay attention to. The best way to address damages on your floor directly depends on the material the finish of your floor is made from. These are several most widespread options: Oil-based polyurethane Water-based polyurethane, Wax coating, Varnish, Stain, Aluminum oxide coating.

Let’s consider possible solutions for Laminate & Brecon flooring. The first disappointing aspect is that this sort of material can not be refinished or polished. But despite this, there is a very effective solution for repairing damaged areas on those floorings. You can hide the scratches by using special tools. It can be touch-up pens, crayons, wax filler sticks. The advantage of those tools is that you can add layers one by one until the color matches the shade of the flooring. It means that you can control the result on your own instead of wasting time choosing the best match for colors in the store.

If you are the lucky owner of a wooden floor, here is another option for you. You can use a liquid cover that will let you build up the color to match the shade of the flooring as well. Another option is the touched-up oil. It works in the pretty same way as the liquid cover, but make sure that you prepared lint-free fabric or a rag to absorb excessive oil.

In case you don’t want to spend money on store-bought solutions we can offer you one DIY idea. This one works for floor finishing with minor superficial scratches. The good thing about this is that you most likely have the ingredients at home and a very natural compound of this mixture. All you need is olive oil and apple cider vinegar. Mix the ingredients and apply the agent to the affected area.

To make this method more effective or to deal with more serious scratches we recommend you utilize sandpaper or another option is steel wool. Before you start, take care to make the area clean. Take the sandpaper or the steel wool and gently rub the surface along the scratch. Very important, don’t try to rub across the area, it will only make the scrab more visible and make the damage more serious.

As soon as you are done with the rubbing, you need to fill the groove and polish the surface. The filler might be wax. Fill the deepening with the wax and carefully buff the area. To do this we recommend you use some soft fabric. After that, you can use the liquid cover we mentioned above or any other matching finish. Very importantly, do not use vax sticks if you have polyurethane finishing. Use crayons, touch-up pens, liquid cover instead.

Sometimes we may face very serious scratches. Sometimes they are so numerous and deep that the only solution left is to sand and refinish all floors. Keep in mind that only real wood floors can be properly sanded and obviously this procedure can not be applied to laminate or some synthetic types of flooring. Besides, make sure that the sanding wasn’t done to floors in your house before. Because it can be done only once or twice before all wood is sanded off.

If you want to refinish all floors, the best option is to invite professionals. And of course, it will be more expensive compared to DIY solutions. The last thing you can do in case a big area of your floor is damaged and there are a lot of scratches is to refinish part of the floor. You can even do it yourself. Remove polyurethane coating. To do this you can apply the agent from vinegar and olive oil or you can take a sponge and moisten it with mineral water. Gently rub the floor, wipe it and let it dry up. Cover the surface with a colored wood putty that matches your floor and after it dries up, sand it smoothly. And the last stage is to restore the coating. Cover the surface with polyurethane or that type of coating you have on the rest of your floors.
